Begin your day in Motohakone, where Hakone Shrine's vivid red torii gate rises directly out of Lake Ashi. Admire one of the most photographed views in the region, with Mt Fuji visible across the water on clear days. From the lakeshore, board the Lake Ashi Pirate Cruise, a themed sightseeing boat that glides across the water past forested hillsides and mountain reflections. Next, ride up to Owakudani, Hakone's active volcanic valley, where sulfur vents still steam from the earth. On clear days, catch one of the best elevated views of Mt Fuji in the entire region. While you're there, try the area's famous black eggs, boiled in the volcanic hot springs until their shells turn jet black. Local legend says each one adds seven years to your life. Continue to the Hakone Open-Air Museum, a sculpture park set against the mountains where large-scale artworks sit among gardens and open lawns, including a dedicated Picasso pavilion. Round out the day at Gotemba Premium Outlets, one of Japan's largest outlet malls, set right at the base of Mt Fuji, for some last-minute shopping before heading home.
