Begin your journey at Otemachi, the center of Japan's economy and the former 'Front Door' of the Shogun's castle. Enter through the majestic Otemon Gate and learn about the deadly 'Masugata' defense strategy—a square courtyard trap designed to box in enemies and expose them to crossfire from the guardhouses above. On days when the East Gardens are open, head into the inner sanctuary. Walk past the 'Hyakunin-bansho' (Guardhouse of 100 Guards) and physically touch the massive stones of the castle walls to feel their history. Climb up the 'Tenshudai'—the massive stone foundation where the main castle tower once stood. From this elevated platform, capture the ultimate Tokyo photo: the ancient ruins of the Shogun's fortress in the foreground, contrasting sharply with the futuristic glass skyscrapers of the Marunouchi business district in the background. On Mondays and Fridays (when the inner gardens are closed), take a specialized 'Outer Defense' route. Walk along the grand moats to the Sakuradamon Gate, a designated National Cultural Property. This gate is famous as the site of the 'Sakuradamon Incident,' a pivotal samurai assassination in 1860 that changed the course of Japanese history. Your guide will vividly retell the drama of that snowy morning.
