Description
Shamisen is a traditional Japanese three-stringed music instrument similar to banjo. It produces a sharp and clear sound reminiscing of the sea waves, strong winds and Japan`s natural landscape. Among various shamisen the Tsugaru style is unique with its powerful vibe, fast pace of sound and energetic performances.
In this one-hour lesson near Shinjuku, Tokyo, you will enjoy learning how to produce the unique sound of Tsugaru shamisen and play a song of your choice. Your instructor is a master of Oyama style, the most prominent school of Tsugaru shamisen, and a double champion in the Tsugaru Shamisen World Cup 2018 & 2019. He will explain in English the characteristics of the musical instrument and will teach you how to play it. You will not only learn the art of playing shamisen, but will also have the chance to see and hear the sounds of various types of shamisen, including Okinawa sanshin. If you have a preferred song you want to challenge yourself playing, request it at the beginning of the lesson. Otherwise you will practice playing a traditional Japanese folk song.
By taking this lesson you will learn about the differences of sound-producing between Western and Japanese musical instruments. In recent years shamisen is attracting attention from fans around the world and this will be a wonderful opportunity to acquaint yourself with the Tsugaru style which originated as the music of traveling musicians and commoners of Tsugaru area in north Japan.
