A very special dining experience. The view of Tokyo was beautiful and the food delicious.

We went with high expectations - our friend gave us a 'credit' and off we went for a big night out of delicious food & wine . . . just not quite so. A lovely young woman met and settled us - and is the only reason I've given 3 stars and not 2 for service - but she obviously wasn't getting us through the dinner selection quickly enough, so there was a young man! We'd preselected our menu - so had a single main course to decide - easy. We decided to splurge and do wine pairing - well that was a mistake . . . we were presented with limited choices, moderate quality & no notes on why these wines were perfect for our meals. On top of our food we spent an extra ~$500AUD - and for this the server interrupted our conversations; another server tried to take my plate away while I was biting into a mouthful of (delicious) food; the wine server started talking, very fast, even before they reached our table, making it difficult to be clear what they were saying and to respond appropriately etc etc . . . However, if we were paying for the view of Tokyo it was fabulous - weirdly they initially seated us right at the back wall - as far away from the view as possible; we had nothing to lose and asked to be relocated closer to the window. That was completely worth the sense that we were inconveniencing the staff - you get my drift!

My journey started with booking through Pocket Concierge using the Amex Platinum card service. With this service, you can only book a set menu, because the membership gives you a £100 credit toward the bill. I chose the 5-course menu as Pocket Concierge does not allow you to pick dishes individually or choose freely from the main menu. There is no flexibility, and payment is taken upfront. In the end, I had to pay an extra £50, making it £150 for two people. In my honest opinion, it was not worth the money at all. The only good parts of the meal were the starter and the lobster ravioli. They actually made a mistake on some dishes, so they allowed us to choose one item from the regular menu — we picked the lobster ravioli, which was excellent. Unfortunately, the rest of the dishes were nowhere near the standard you would expect for £150. The dessert was a pistachio mousse and a blueberry tart, but I would have preferred something more special — perhaps cakes or pastries similar to an afternoon-tea style. Even the tea came in a plain white cup, while other guests were having theirs in elegant glass pots. Small details, but they matter, especially at this price point. What disappointed me most was that this visit was for a birthday celebration. All they did was a simple decoration on the plate, even though I had already paid for the “birthday cake” as part of the set menu. There was no extra effort, no special touch, nothing to make the occasion feel memorable. Overall, I would not recommend choosing the set menu option. You do not get your money’s worth, and there is no flexibility to choose what you actually want. This entire experience was very underwhelming and left me totally disappointed.

I visited for my birthday lunch and chose the four-course menu. The mackerel pasta surprised me with its fluffy, delicate texture — it was incredibly delicious with a generous portion. The short rib for the main was incredibly tender and flavorful. With the beautiful view from the 39th floor, it almost made me forget I was still in Japan.
