Sushi and Robata Sushi Yama offers an excellent course menu featuring a variety of nigiri sushi, tempura, and grilled dishes, all prepared with fresh ingredients sourced from Hokkaido. My family chose the Unkai Course, and it was a wonderful dining experience from start to finish. The meal began with a comforting chawanmushi topped with sweet, flavorful crab meat, which set a delightful tone for the evening. For the main dish, I had the grilled chicken from Shiretoko, a rare specialty that is not commonly found elsewhere. The tempura platter was the highlight of the course for me — especially the sea eel and large shrimp, both perfectly crispy and delicious. Their drink menu is also impressive, offering a wide selection of Hokkaido specialties, from Yoichi whisky highballs and Otokoyama sake to refreshing red melon sours. It truly felt like a full culinary tour of Hokkaido. Everyone left the restaurant with happy and satisfied stomachs.

This cozy sushi restaurant offers a warm atmosphere and impressively fresh seafood. The nigiri was beautifully prepared, especially the tuna, scallop, and delicate white fish, each served with perfectly balanced rice. The seared fatty nigiri was a highlight, rich, buttery, and full of flavor. The creamy steamed custard added a comforting touch, while the ice-cold Abashiri Ryuhyo Draft beer paired perfectly with the meal. Friendly service and thoughtful presentation made the experience even better. A great spot for quality sushi in a relaxed setting.

A Delightful Evening at Sushi Course Unkai in Shinjuku, and it was a thoroughly smashing experience from start to finish. If you’re looking for a spot to enjoy a relaxed evening with mates, this is definitely it. The atmosphere is wonderfully laid-back, making us feel completely at ease while catching up. The service was exemplary—attentive without being overbearing, which added to the effortless flow of the night. As for the food, the "Unkai" course offered a fantastic variety, from the delicate Chawanmushi to the expertly seared Aburi sushi. A particular highlight was the beverage selection ; the sake and drinks were quite sophisticated and paired brilliantly with the fresh seafood. Whether it was the perfectly crisp tempura or the rich Ikura bowl, every dish hit the mark. It’s a brilliant find for anyone wanting top-tier sushi and a proper good time in Shinjuku.

It was wonderful to find such a peaceful, quiet spot right next to Kabukicho. I came here with friends, and the atmosphere is elegant and refined—not too noisy, so we could talk very comfortably. We ordered the Unkai Course. As a woman, I found the portion size to be just right cuz I left feeling perfectly full. The quality of the fish was exceptionally fresh, and I particularly loved the texture of the Chu-toro. The wasabi is already tucked between the fish and the rice, which is exactly what you expect from a high-quality sushi restaurant. The Ikura was huge, plump, and incredibly juicy. Personally, I also really loved the first dish, the Chawanmushi. It is completely different from the kind you get at chain sushi restaurants; the layers of egg and crab were so rich and flavorful. The freshly fried tempura was also delicious! It was served with a matcha salt, which paired perfectly. Since this is a Hokkaido-based restaurant, we also tried some sake from Hokkaido. The interior features wooden bears everywhere, which are very cute.

One of the best spots for sushi in Shinjuku by far. A hidden gem that’s not too far from the station, I went here with a group of friends who are Tokyo locals that know the food scene quite well. We had the Unkai Course which was like a round trip experience of Japanese cuisine. This course has everything, and it’s great way to sample all the dishes available without ordering à la carte. The atmosphere is lively and versatile. Intimate enough for small groups, with room to accommodate for big groups. The service was excellent which is typical for Japan, yet our waiters went above and beyond, even explaining the cuisine and suggesting drink pairings. Melt in your mouth sushi, tempura with the perfect amount of crunch, and craft beers to wash it all down. Can’t wait to come back here on my next visit to Tokyo!
