i ordered the special melting cheese udon in tomato cream and it was one of the best udon ive had in japan. the flavour was very rich, the bacon was thick and tasty too. I 100% recommend it. but my friend ordered a normal creamy udon she didn’t like it very much, she liked what i ordered tho. over all good we will come again! i really wish this place has wifi tho, phone service on B1 floor isn’t really good.
Had a really enjoyable meal at Tsurutontan Udon Noodle Brasserie Shinjuku — definitely one of the more memorable udon spots we tried in Tokyo. We ordered the white sesame dandan udon (hot) and the mentaiko cream udon, and both dishes stood out in very different ways. The white sesame dandan udon had a rich, nutty flavour with a subtle but noticeable spice. It’s the kind of bowl that feels very comforting and warming, especially after a long day out. The sesame flavour builds as you eat, and the slight heat keeps it interesting without ever becoming overwhelming. The mentaiko cream udon leaned more indulgent — creamy, smooth, and packed with umami. The mentaiko adds a light briny saltiness that balances out the richness of the cream really well. It almost feels like a fusion between Japanese udon and a creamy pasta dish, but it works surprisingly well. The sauce clings nicely to the noodles, so every bite is flavourful. What really ties everything together is the quality of the udon itself. The noodles are thick, springy, and have a really satisfying chew. They hold up well in both the creamy and soup-based broths, which makes the overall eating experience even better. A unique highlight here is that you can choose your portion size — up to 3 times the standard serving at no extra cost. It’s a great touch and makes the meal feel even more worth it, especially if you’re coming in hungry. The overall atmosphere is slightly more upscale compared to your typical casual udon shop, but still comfortable enough for a relaxed meal. Service was efficient, and the experience felt polished without being overly formal. Overall, Tsurutontan delivers high-quality, flavourful udon with a bit of creativity and refinement. Definitely a place I’d come back to, especially when craving something comforting but a little elevated.
My friend recommended this place and she made a good call. The udon was some of the best I’ve ever had. Just be aware that normal udon has only one noodle. I did not now that was standard and got the 3 middle bowl. I had a hard time finishing it lol. 03/25/2026
Hands down one of the best udon bowls I’ve had. The noodles have that perfect chewy bite - bouncy, thick, and incredibly satisfying with every bite. The texture is unforgettable! The curry udon is especially outstanding and absolutely worth ordering if you visit.
Had a great shabu shabu lunch here. I booked the Shabu-Shabu Hot Pot Banquet online through Tabelog and they seated us right away even though we were early. No difficulty communicating with the staff in English and our few words of Japanese. You order through a tablet which has an English mode. Our pre-booked meal showed up on the tablet and we also ordered drinks which were fantastic: alcoholic ginger beer (tastes like a slightly sweet lite beer with ginger), fruit cocktails (I forget the name), and something like a mojito. Our banquet for two included several courses including a small thin udon soup with egg yolk, mixed appetizer platter (pork belly was a big hit and I liked the tofu too), sashimi, a big shabu meal of meats and veggies. They said we could get udon with our shabu-shabu if we wanted and I think that replaced a different udon dish after (based on Tabelog's listing). I think it was great as part of the shabu-shabu. Dessert (I think this is where we had an incredible crab custard). I've had Chinese hotpot several times and shabu-shabu was not too different, but I really enjoyed the noodles and the two sauces were great: sesame and ponzu. The place was a little difficult to find because the entrance has no English and you need to go downstairs, but you can see the food under glass from the sidewalk. They were very welcoming to our two kids (who just ate part of our banquet and it was easily enough food).
