From the moment I approached Ukiyo, about 50 feet from the entrance- I was met with a warm smile that held the door, to a place I couldn’t possibly expect. The moment the big beautiful glass door opened I knew I wasn’t prepared for the experience I was about to have. Inside, the ambiance was like a modern concrete cave. Hard to describe, but absolutely memorable. Incredible lighting, a beautiful counter—everything was meticulously designed. The attention to detail floored me, even the music. I had somber melodies with ice cream and crescendos with brighter dishes, like their sashimi grouper with rhubarb. Whether the music changing with each course was intentional or not, it’s something you still have to appreciate . I can’t help but think it was just one of those things that you may or may not notice that add to the experience in such a unique way. Speaking of the grouper, just wow. And let me tell you about the brioche: that was the best bread I’ve ever had by a long shot. The sommelier, with a smile of genuine passion, made every pairing feel like a personal gift. The staff’s knowledge and care made me feel at home, language barriers never an issue. Each dish was introduced in a way that I fully understood and appreciated. The charcoal-roasted peas gave me a texture I didn’t know I needed. Every bite—no, every moment felt like art. Honestly, I barely chewed. The food melted on my tongue or burst in my mouth like a supernova. If I could experience this again for the first time I wouldn’t change a thing. Ukiyo is more than a meal. It’s the best meal I’ve ever had. I am deeply thankful for this experience, and I’ll be dreaming of that grouper, that duck, and that bread (and that clarified sake) for a long, long time. Wow - just wow. The spring dinner course blew me away. So much effort, care, thought and creativity went into the menu. The ingredients were fresh, seasonal, delicate and balanced. Everything was prepared in a way that allowed the individual flavours to shine and delight your tastebuds. It's been one week and I am still thinking about this stupendous meal. The young chef has many great ideas and he's definitely one to watch in Japan's culinary scene. I’m grateful to have experienced his food.
This place is truly a hidden gem (literally). It took us about 15 minutes to find it since it’s tucked away in the back of an alley, but it was absolutely worth the search. The food was delicious and incredibly well thought out. I loved how each dish blended local, seasonal Japanese ingredients with a creative Western twist. What really stood out, though, was the service. The staff were all super friendly, spoke excellent English, and were very knowledgeable about every dish, how it was made and what to expect. It’s rare to see a team so in sync with the chef. A really nice touch was the chef coming out to greet us and personally walk us out, it made the whole experience feel even more special. I’d definitely recommend this place for the full experience, not just the food. ありがとう!
Had a really special time here. The meal was incredible- every course was delicious, and the pairings were so thoughtfully matched. My partner had the non-alcoholic pairing and we were blown away by how much skill and effort had gone into each one. It’s a beautiful, cosy space with gorgeous little touches. The team were so friendly, and really went out of their way to make us feel at home. Thank you for having us!
