Large department store. Very "old school" but if it ain't broken no need to fix it. Had relaxed time shopping and stopping for coffee.
Writing about just the Matsuzakaya Ueno food hall (didn't visit the rest of store). Incredible selection of bentos, sushi, confections, etc. We'd spend too much time ogling the food and being incapable of deciding what to buy. Went there more than a few times for last minute dinner take out.
It’s a typical block of department store, the main quirks that stand out are the connection to the subway, the odd low-ceiling floor between first & second (which is also where the tax exempt counter is located) and the roof top lounge/stage area. There’s also a shrine (靏護（かくご）稲荷神社 / kakugo Inari) at the roof top! There isn’t a typical food court, but the basement has a grocery where you can purchase food which you can then consume at the rooftop. The shops were mostly local, ranging from affordable to expensive. It also had walkways connecting to the other department store, PARCO.
Lovely shopping mall across two buildings - big enough for variety, small enough for my energy battery! We got so many souvenirs here - great quality, reasonably priced!
